Holding the Camera

Alberto Vieceli

The Swiss Camera Museum is joining forces with the Festival Images Vevey (5-27 September 2020) to present the exhibition Holding the camera by Alberto Vieceli. Between 2015 and 2019, the Zurich-based graphic designer has collected more than 700 images from old manuals, brochures and photographic magazines. These illustrations have a didactic function: they show the ideal way to hold a camera.

Alberto Vieceli has selected around 350 of these images in the book Holding the camera, recently published by everyedition. He classified them according to multiple criteria, making a documentary and unusual inventory of the best way to hold a camera. The passage from the book to the exhibition is a further creative gesture. In the museum, Alberto Vieceli subverts his own typology to propose another, even more playful and unexpected arrangement. This inventory has the value of a conservatory of good gestures in the age of silver photography.

Holding the camera is a proposal of the Festival Images Vevey realized in collaboration with the Swiss Camera Museum.
